Tragic Site 41 Site 41 in Tyuratam (Baikonur) is mostly known as the location of the worst disaster in the history of rocketry. What is much less known is that after Nedelin's catastrophe, it was re-built to continue testing of the ill-fated R-16 rocket and, later yet was refurbished for top-secret missions of the Kosmos rocket. For decades, Kosmos remained the only rocket never seen lifting off from Baikonur on available footage among numerous other launchers based at the launch site.
